Prescribing of Medications for minor self limiting illnesses

We have had an increasing number of calls from patients wanting an appointment with a GP simply to obtain Paracetamol for minor self limiting illnesses.

The practice feels this is not a good use of appointment time or NHS resources.

A GP’s responsibility is to prescribe drugs that they feel are necessary for treatment of the patient and they are not responsible for prescribing what the patient feels that they should be prescribed.

The practice feels that it is reasonable  to expect our patients to have a first aid box at home with remedies for minor illnesses, which should include simple painkillers (such as Paracetomol), antiseptics and Elastoplasts.

For self limiting illnesses please speak to your local pharmacist or ring NHS 111 before ringing your GP.
